Is it bad to play games? Is it only children's activity? Do
we ignore other people because of them? These are all questions with which I
struggle. Right now I would answer to all those questions with "NO".
Why would I answer like that? Because the games are great tool for learning and
that's what children are using them for. Why then, once we grow up we stop
playing games? Do we really stop or it's just what we think? I'd like to share
my search for answers to all those questions. Show you my point of view that
games and life are very much the same and that games can help you gain skills
which are applicable in other areas of your life. I do my best to do it and you
can too!
I was attracted to video games at the age of 14. Computers
at that time were very scarce and unpopular in Bulgaria. I used every spare
time to try and play all kind of different games. I was so addicted that I
played everything I can. With time and experience I filtered those which were
interested to me. Doesn't this look like the real life, where you try different
things: professions, sports, widgets, girlfriends if you wish, to find that
thing which is in unison with you?
Now you're going to ask what's common between video games
and life? For me this is the self-development part.
I'll do my best to show you my point of view on what could
be learned from video games and how I achieve the balance with all other
activities in which I'm engaged in daily. How did I come at the point to relate
games and life? By chance I’ve collided with this strange difficult to find
animal called self-development. I was impressed that it’s up to me to control
my life (who doesn’t want that huh?) and I was thirsty for more knowledge on
the subject. All those guys telling me that I can change my life, it’s only
myself and to stop casting blame on others. After I’ve kept reading such
literature something like a snowball thrown over a hill happens.
I’ve started with Tony Robbins (who have most effect over
me), and I strongly advise you to search the guy out, he is amazing, full of
passion and ready to guide down the right path. Not before long I’ve encountered
Marie Forleo (thanks to my beloved one for this, just don’t tell her, I’m
protecting my dignity :P), Gary Vaynerchuk (very direct man, my style of
communication J),
Ken Robinson (amazing way of sharing the information), Simon Sinek (after each
of his speeches I’m speechless) and many others.
After reading so much literature on the topic, part of it
applied, other part still in the process, I believe that the society put some
chains on us, which every human being can break. It’s no easy of course. How
sick of this way of living are you?
With this blog, I’d like to share with you a different point
of view, so that it will be easier for you to decide whether you want games to
be part of your way of learning/living. Whether you want to enter the amazing
world of self-development through methodology called games!
Here are some fast facts about me:
- I’m a programmer by profession, this might be the reason I’m constantly searching to improve something, also a high tech junkie on topics like: AI, IoT etc.
- Huge huge fan of Star Wars (surprise huh?) I’ve played almost all games on this topic + having a full library of books (haven’t read them all … yet)
- The games I’d prefer to play are:
- RPG (this is THE top priority games for me. The story each of them share is like a book) – Dragon Age every game, Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, The Old Republic, a fan of BioWare in short
- Strategies – this one is pretty clear, algorithms (professional bug) small improvements on the strategy, which could lead to huge benefits – mainly Civilization series, Star Craft 1 & 2, Warcraft, Galaxy of Heroes (on android device).
- I’ve recently discovered MOBA genre with Heroes of the Storm – I forgot to mention: A huge fan of Blizzard also!
- 3rd person shooters – Tomb Raider, Jedi Academy (all star wars oriented), Mass Effect, Prince of Persia
- I’m training Wing Chun (seeing it as a game, which involves a lot of self-development)
- Love helping people to improve (after all this is the idea behind this blog)
- Sports which I’ve trained over the years:
- Volleyball – definitely my favorite, played it for some time in amateur league, trained 8 years and counting
- Badminton – discovered it pretty late, several months ago, it’s amazing, you should give it a try
- Snowboarding – the story here is quite interesting. To cut it short, my girlfriend should’ve put a gun to my head to FORCE me to try it. Now the roles have switched and we don’t miss a winter. It’s strange how things work hm?
- I’ve played a little bit basketball, soccer, table tennis, but those are not the sports I’d like to train for a lifetime. Does this looks like the search for the correct game genre?
Thank you for your time and attention, hope we’ll get to
meet and discuss your point of view for the games!
